MANILA — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday confirmed the death of a second Filipino from a devastating earthquake in Myanmar.

The agency said it was "informed by the Philippine Embassy in Yangon of the positive identification of the remains of a second confirmed Filipino victim of the powerful 7.7 earthquake which hit Myanmar last March 28."

"The family of the deceased Filipino has been informed. They have requested media to respect their privacy in this very difficult time," the agency said.

"Out of respect for the wishes of the family, the Department is unable to provide any further details," it added.

Two Filipinos remained unaccounted for in Mandalay, Myanmar, the DFA said.

The agency on Wednesday confirmed that another Filipino fatality in the Myanmar quake had been identified.

Last month's tremor razed thousands of homes, schools and monasteries in Myanmar’s central belt.

Junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun said on Tuesday evening that 148 people remained missing from the March 28 quake as fatalities hit 3,645, with 5,017 people injured.

The earthquake has compounded the economic woes of the country gripped by a civil war since the military seized power in a 2021 coup.

With the junta at the helm, Myanmar has become internationally isolated and sanctioned while its territory has split into areas controlled by the military, anti-coup guerillas and ethnic armed factions.

Half the population of 51 million live in poverty while more than 3.5 million people are displaced.
