MANILA — The Supreme Court has asked the Senate and the House of Representatives to comment on petitions for the enactment of an anti-political dynasty law.

“The SC required respondents Senate and the House of Representatives to comment on the petition within a non-extendible period of 10 days from notice,” SC Spokesperson Atty. Camille Ting said.

The court consolidated three pending petitions asking to compel Congress to enact an anti-political dynasty law, citing the 1987 Constitution which explicitly prohibits political dynasties.

The three petitions were filed by 1Sambayan Coalition, Kapatiran Party, and Wilfredo Trinidad, among others.

Citing 2006 to 2018 data, the petitioners had noted that almost 80 percent of Congress and more than half of local government officials come from political families.

The petitioners argued that Congress has “ministerial and mandatory duty” to enact an anti-political dynasty law, as commanded by the 1987 Constitution.

“The time has come for this Honorable Court to exercise this power and compel Congress to fulfill its constitutional obligation,” the petitioners said.

Last year, a group of UP Law 1976 graduates also filed before the Supreme Court a similar petition for mandamus.
