MANILA — Malacañang on Monday reaffirmed the Marcos administration’s support for the timely completion of the Horizon 3 of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Modernization Program to build a more credible and reliable defense posture for the country.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro made the statement shortly after Philippine military chief Romeo Brawner, Jr. announced that the AFP was looking at acquiring more missile systems, warships, and fighter jets to strengthen the country’s ability to deter threats.

Castro said the Philippines’ efforts to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities was not meant to target any country.

This, despite an earlier statement by Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez that China’s growing assertiveness and maritime expansion was the reason behind government’s continuing modernization of the AFP and acquisition of  F-16 fighter jets and other equipment.

China claims most of the South China Sea despite an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis, and its coast guard has clashed repeatedly with that of the Philippines.
