MANILA — Sen. Ronald dela Rosa on Thursday said he was contemplating on flying to The Hague, Netherlands to visit former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently in the custody of the International Criminal Court for a crimes against humanity case.

"Mag-try ako mag-apply ng Schengen visa kung issuehan ako. Pag may pagkakataon, before elections, sana makabisita muna ako sa kanya," Dela Rosa said.

Dela Rosa, who is seeking reelection, earlier said he would seek all legal remedies to avoid being arrested by the ICC in case it issues a warrant against him over his supposed role in the bloody drug war.

The senator said he would still like to visit Duterte even if he too risks being arrested while there.

"Sige lang. I-detain lang ako. Pero pagpunta ako doon sa The Hague, mag-wig ako. Mag-wig ako para hindi nila ako makilala doon," he said.

Dela Rosa earlier blamed "greed for power" for the government's decision to allow Duterte's prosecution at the ICC.

Duterte was arrested on March 11 on his arrival from Hong Kong at the request of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as part of its probe into his "war on drugs" that defined his presidency.

The ICC warrant for Duterte's arrest said that as president, the 80-year-old Duterte allegedly created, funded, and armed death squads that carried out murders of purported drug users and dealers.

He was brought to The Hague in the Netherlands on the same day he was arrested.

Duterte on March 14 appeared via video link before ICC judges. He is set to attend a September 25 hearing to confirm the charges against him.
