MANILA — Former Duterte presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said he will face the qualified human trafficking and regular human trafficking charges filed against him by the Department of Justice even if he is currently in the Netherlands applying for asylum.

Roque told reporters in an online press conference that there was grave abuse of discretion on the part of the government in filing of the charges against him supposedly because of his direct link to the illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators or POGO hubs.

“Hindi ko po tatakasan iyan, haharapin ko pa rin sila sa korte dahil meron naman pong karapatan ang kahit sinong mamamayan magsampa ng petisyon pag nagkaroon ng grave abuse of discretion ang kahit sinong taong gobyerno at kapag sila ay nagsampa ng non-bailable na kaso, walang kaebi-ebidensya, in my mind that is grave abuse of discretion,” Roque said.

Roque however noted that he has yet to receive the resolution of the Department of Justice on pursuing the cases against him before the Angeles City Regional Trial Court.

“I will continue to avail of judicial remedies, so hindi po ako magiging pugante, I am not evading arrest, I will be exercising my rights to avail of judicial remedy and exercising my rights as a human being under the international convention on the rights of refugees and asylum-seekers,” Roque said.

Roque reiterated that the charges against him will further boost his chances of securing an asylum in the Netherlands.

Roque believes the DOJ will not succeed in blocking his asylum application because of the trafficking charges.

“Eh sa Timor-Leste nga hindi sila nagtagumpay sa kaso ni Arnie Teves, dito pa kaya sa Netherlands na pinagyayabang nila na they are the capital of human rights and the rule of law, kahit anong pagtutol nila, iyan ay magiging pruweba pa, na talaga namang may unjust prosecution, dahilan para tuluyan nang ma-grant ang aking asylum,” Roque said.
