MANILA -- The Philippine government is determined to empower and promote the active participation of women in the country’s peacebuilding and security initiatives, Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity Carlito Galvez said Monday.

He said the government is set to undertake efforts to implement and localize the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (NAPWPS) in the coming months.

“Ang gagawin natin sa susunod na taon, at mga buwan, ay ating iimplement at ilolocalize ang national action plan on women, peace and security, dahil tayo ang isa sa una na bumuo ng NAPWPS,” Galvez said in a televised briefing.

The OPAPRU earlier said that the Philippine National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security aims to “broaden the country’s approach to address the challenges faced by women of diverse and intersecting identities during situations of armed conflict and acknowledges their valuable contributions to peacebuilding.” The document also “emphasizes the promotion and protection of women's rights, particularly in conflict situations.”

Earlier this March, the Philippines launched the Women, Peace and Security Center of Excellence which will allow government to focus on "embedding and localizing women, peace and security principles across all phases of conflict transformation" and "seeking opportunities and developing methodologies to build the WPS capacities of key stakeholders."
