MANILA — The Department of Education (DepEd) said on Monday it would strengthen the implementation of four summer programs in May to improve foundational skills of learners in all levels.

In a press release, the agency identified the programs Bawat Bata Makababasa Program (BBMP), Literacy Remediation Program (LRP), Summer Academic Remedial Program, and Learning Camp (LC).

DepEd said the four programs would focus on targeted teaching, mobilization of volunteers, welfare of learners, and involvement of communities.

ROLLOUT

The agency will conduct the pilot implementation of BBMP in Region 9 or the Zamboanga Peninsula from May 8 to June 6, 2025.

It aims to assist about 75,000 students from grades 1 to 3, who have difficulty in reading based on literacy assessments.

Under the program, the learners will be given daily reading tutorials along with activities.

Around 7,500 teachers and volunteer tutors will be deployed to the region to implement "focused instruction." Volunteer tutors will undergo training from April 23 to 30.

Meanwhile, the LRP aims to support 59,627 Grade 3 learners in the "Low Emerging Readers sa English" category based on the End-of-School-Year (EoSY) result of the Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment (CRLA).

DepEd will train 14,023 teachers to conduct two hours of daily remediation sessions from May 13 to June 6,2025.

The program will be implemented in all regions except Zamboanga Peninsula.

The SARP will be rolled out nationwide from May 13 to June 6,2024 for Grades 4 to 12 students that need additional help in one or two subjects.

The program will prioritize learners that failed one subject, senior high school students that need to repeat their prerequisites, and students with disabilities who need special assistance.

Meantime, the LC will be conducted in 10 schools in regions part of the MATATAG Pilot (Regions I, II, VII, XII, National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region and CARAGA).

During the Intervention camp, there will be one teacher or volunteer for every five students, while each facilitator in the Consolidation and Enhancement Camps will have up to 25 students to ensure adequate support.
