MANILA — An official to the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Wednesday they aim to release the guides for the revised Senior High School curriculum by first or second week of May.

DepEd Assistant Secretary for Curriculum and Teaching Jerome Buenviaje told ABS-CBN News they allotted more time for the online public consultation, which was supposed to last until April 11.

"In-extend natin yung public consultation on that. Kasi nga medyo naghahabol tayo. Pilot kasi ito eh. Pag sinabing pilot, hindi naman maaapektuhan lahat, so piling-pili lang. Pero siyempre yung matututunan natin sa ating experience will enhance the program as we roll out the senior high school program nationally," he said in an interview.

The agency earlier shared the consultation packet of the "Strengthened Senior High School Program" for Grades 11 and 12.

DepEd said the feedback from the consultations will be reviewed and integrated into the final SHS curriculum framework.

"So in terms of public consultation, ongoing siya until Friday if I remember it right. So pwede pa sila magbigay ng suhestiyon, ng kanilang mga ideas doon sa online access na meron ito. Makikita niyo yun sa ating DepEd social media accounts," Buenviaje said.

"After that [consultation] magkakaroon tayo ng inter-agency consultation. After that hopefully mai-finalize natin at mai-release natin yung tinatawag nating curriculum guides, mga information, packages for strengthened senior high school by first or second week of May," he explained.

Despite the extension, the DepEd official assured the pilot implementation will be able to proceed as scheduled.

"Today ang last day naman ng selection ng pilot at the regional level. Tapos by Friday ififinalize naman namin yung selection sa national level. So yung finilter ng region at ng division, finalize namin by the end of this week," Buenviaje said.

"So ibig sabihin sabay siyang gumagalaw. So habang nagkakaroon ng consultation, rine-ready natin yung ating pilot schools," he added.

Buenviaje said they may be able to release the list of qualified schools for the pilot implementation by next week.

A key feature in the new curriculum is the reduction of the core subjects from 15 offered per semester to five offered for a full year in Grade 11.

The proposed subjects are Effective Communication, Life Skills, General Mathematics, General Science, and Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino.

"The updated core SHS subjects are designed to deepen learners’ foundational competencies in communication, scientific and mathematical thinking," he said.
