Filipino Catholics mourned the passing of Pope Francis on Monday (April 21).

Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died on Monday, ending an often turbulent reign marked by division and tension as he sought to overhaul the hidebound institution.

In Manila, church bells tolled shortly after the news of the Pope's death. Roman Catholics comprise up to 85% of the Philippine population of over 110 million, making it the religion's stronghold in Asia.

In 2015, Francis travelled to the Philippines to visit victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which struck in 2013, and held a mass attended by millions of Catholic devotees.
