MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday mourned the passing of screen icon Nora Aunor.

Marcos said Aunor’s films such as “Banaue”, “Bona”, and “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” would “forever be part of the national heritage.”

He also praised her “stellar performances” in other films such as “Himala”, “Thy Womb”, and “The Flor Contemplacion Story”.

“Her genius was a gift to the Filipino nation,” the President said in a statement.

“I offer my heartfelt condolences to Nora Aunor’s family, friends, and the film industry itself. Let us pray together for the eternal repose of the soul of our beloved National Artist,” he aded.

Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, Aunor burst onto the entertainment scene in the 1960s as a singer with a powerful, soulful voice.

She later starred in movies where her petite, dusky looks broke stereotypes of fair-skinned leading ladies patterned after Hollywood.

The passing of the “Superstar” of Philippine cinema was announced by her family on Wednesday night. She was 71.
