MANILA — Along with the observance of Holy Week, various groups and sectors held a protest in Manila on Wednesday morning, April 16.

Aside from the usual placards brought during rallies, the group also caught attention with what appeared to be a reenactment of the Passion of the Christ they called “Kalbaryo ng Maralita."

According to Mimi Doringo, secretary general of Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (KADAMAY), this is one of their ways to call on the government to take action on various issues faced by the country.

“Ngayon kasi ay nasa Semana Santa tayo. Kailangan nating ilagay doon sa kalagayan ‘yong mga panawagan ng nga taumbayan. Pinapakita natin na sa bagong panahon natin ngayon, nagpapatuloy ‘yong paghihirap ni Kristo,” said Doringo.

She said that the cross used in the protest symbolizes the people's struggles.

“Meron siyang nakabulubod na mga alambre, ito ‘yong pagpapatindi lalo ng kahirapan na dinaranas mula sa mataas na presyo ng nga bilihin, mga bayarin, kabaratan ng sahod ng nga manggagawa, (at) kawalan ng suporta sa ating mga magsasaka,” she added.

Around 300 individuals from different sectors participated in the protest, among them was 25-year-old John Griefen Arlegui from Tondo, Manila.

Arlegui called for an increase in workers’ wages, proposing a minimum wage of P1,200 per day.

The group was kept from reaching Mendiola by Manila Police District personnel who blocked them along Recto Avenue, Manila.
