MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday released its resolution identifying the dominant majority and dominant minority parties for the 2025 midterm polls.

Lakas-CMD was named the dominant majority party, while Nacionalista was the dominant minority party.

The dominant majority party, dominant minority party, and major political parties will be entitled to one official watcher in every polling place and canvassing center during the May 2025 elections.

The dominant majority and dominant minority parties will also have their own servers linked to the central server of the commission, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said.

The Comelec noted that only 11 national political parties filed their petition for accreditation, from which the dominant majority and dominant minority parties were selected.

The nine other major political parties include Akbayan Citizens Action Party, Aksyon Demokratiko, Liberal Party of the Philippines (LP) , Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), National Unity Party (NUP), Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan, Partido Demokratikong Reporma, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas and United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

The Comelec also listed the following 14 major local parties in their respective regions or provinces.

COMELEC CONTROL

Meanwhile, Garcia said he believed there was no need to place any part of the country under Comelec control for now.

Tensions between rival politicians in some provinces have appeared to calm down with 67 days to go before the May 12 elections, he said in a news forum.

“Nitong nakaraang dalawang linggo biglang tumahimik na naman eh… biglang wala na naman,” the official said.

While some politicians have requested their areas under Comelec control, the poll body would rely on the police and military’s recommendation, Garcia said.
