An SUV driver is facing charges after shooting 4 people including his own girlfriend in a road rage incident along Marcos Highway, Sitio Calumpang, Barangay San Jose in Antipolo City Sunday afternoon.

Eyewitness videos earlier showed the suspect being punched by at least 2 motorcycle riders who had accused him of driving his SUV dangerously close to their vehicles.

The man then pulled out a gun and started shooting at the riders, wounding 4 including his own girlfriend.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Manongdo, Antipolo City Police chief, said the suspect had just come from a private resort while the group of riders had just visited Tanay, Rizal.

He said the suspect then tried to drive away from the scene but was arrested by responding policemen at a Commission on Elections checkpoint.

One of the victims in the shooting incident, a 52-year-old male, was shot in the head and remains in critical condition. His 22-year-old son was also wounded after being shot in the arm.

Another victim, a 29-year-old male who had tried to stop the fight, was shot in the chest.

The suspect’s girlfriend sustained a gunshot wound on the thigh.

The suspect, a resident of Quezon City, has insisted the shooting was done in self-defense after 2 of the riders ganged up on him, Manongdo said.

“Ini-insist niya na self defense ‘yung ginawa niya. May kumakalat na video na agrabyado siya dun sa away kasi naka-helmet ‘yung kaaway niya tapos more than 2 ‘yung kanyang kasuntukan. Bahala na siyang mag-depensa sa prosecutor at sa court kung tatanggapin ‘yung kanyang alibi,” the police official said.

The suspect earlier said he had turned on his hazard lights and was following a convoy when he was stopped by the group of motorcycle riders.

He said he had tried to defuse the situation at first since he was with his family.

Nag-usap po kami sinabi ko kumalma po kayo kasi may kasama ko po 'yung pamilya ko," he said.

He said he became angry and pulled out his gun after the group ganged up on him.

Manongdo said the suspect had a license for the firearm but is not exempted from the election gun ban. He is set to face multiple frustrated homicide charges as well as violation of the Omnibus Election Code.
