MANILA — “Fake you!”

This is the message of House Deputy Majority Leader and La Union 1st District Representative Paolo Ortega to trolls and peddlers of false information online, as he welcomed the idea of the Presidential Communications Office to study the creation of a government body that will regulate social media and combat the proliferation of “fake news”.

“Sinisira talaga itong bansa natin ng fake news na ‘yan na ginagamit ang social media. I guess she’s coming from a place na gusto niya credible and official po lahat ng information… Kailan po kaya kami magko-collab?” Ortega said.

“Kumbaga nakamaskara kasi sila sa social media— ‘Yung mga trolls, ‘yung mga masasama ang intention, mga fake news kayo, fake you!" he added.

Bataan 1st District Representative Geraldine Roman is also proposing a measure that seeks to create a “Digital Council of the Philippines”. She and Ortega are looking into the possibility of mandating the registration of content creators and social media influencers.

“’Yung suggestion ko ng Digital Council of the Philippines should also include a registry of content creators. Importante ito katulad nung nabanggit namin kanina. Put a name to your different social media accounts. Behind this different social media accounts, there should be a name, a person, who can be held responsible and accountable, and who practices responsible content creation. Now rest assured that I have done my homework, and I have looked into the constitutionality of this measure... and I really want it to be the least restrictive measure,” Roman said.

“Parang sim registration nga ‘yan... If you have nothing to hide, you have no hidden agenda, you have no intent to maliciously deceive the people or to serve the interests of certain parties unscrupulously, wala ka dapat okatakot, pangatawanan mo. Proud dapat ikaw habang nire-register ang pangalan mo because you're behind certain social media accounts that only produce content that is verifiable, that are based on the truth, on evidence, on facts. So kung wala kang ikatatakot, bakit ka matatakot na magparegister doon?” she added.

Roman, however, sees time constraints in getting such a measure enacted under the 19th Congress.
