MANILA —  Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman George Erwin Garcia said on Monday that it may be the agency's fault that some of the younger generation lack awareness about the national elections.

This, after an "It's Showtime" contestant admitted that she has "limited" knowledge of the poll body and is an unregistered voter.

"Nalulungkot po ako parang failure ang Comelec. Parang kami ang may kasalanan doon. Parang hindi namin naipapahayag mabuti sa sambayanan kung sino kami, ano ang kaming katungkulan, at magkaroroon pa pala ng eleksyon," Garcia said.

The poll chief added that the "Showtime Sexy Babe" contestant may be a representation of countless other Filipinos who need to be educated on the electoral process.

"Ang gusto namin alamin, bakit? Dahil ba sa kahirapan? Dahil ba sa kawalan ng pamamaraan para malaman 'yung mga nangyayari sa ating bansa? O talagang may kakulangan talaga sa voter's education program ng Comelec," he said.

Garcia said Comelec has invited the contestant to meet, with the goal of spreading awareness especially as the May elections near.
