MANILA — Supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday afternoon marched in areas of Manila to call for his return to the Philippines in time for his 80th birthday celebration.

Hundreds of Duterte supporters clad in green walked from Bonifacio Shrine near Manila City Hall to Quiapo Church for the protest.

Leticia, who hails from Rizal, said she was saddened that the former Philippine leader is celebrating his birthday at the International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands.

“Maraming taong nagmamahal kaya ganito. Napakalungkot ang ginawa sa kanya ng gobyerno,” said Leticia.

(Many people love him. What the government did to him is sad)

“Pangulong Marcos, binoto ko yan, nakipag-away ako para sa kanya pero wala siyang ginawa,” he said.

(I voted for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. I fought for him but he didn't do anything to stop this)

Another supporter, who identified himself as Red, claimed the whole world wants Duterte to return to the Philippines.

“Nakakalungkot talaga kasi kung tutuusin naman, alam niyo kung ano ang sinurrender natin doon? (Netherlands) ang kalayaan natin bilang Pilipino. Yun ang sinurrender natin,” Red said.

(It's really sad because if you look at at — You know what we surrendered? Our freedom as Filipinos.)

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, testifying at a Senate hearing on the arrest, acknowledged that the families of drug war victims had sought justice at the ICC because it was elusive through domestic processes.

"Because for the longest time ang biktima po, mga namatayan or pamilya nilang napatay o napaslang sa drug war ay wala hong mapuntahan kaya dun po sila nagpunta sa ICC," he told senators, including Sen. Imee Marcos, the President's sister.

(Because for the longest time, the families whose loved ones were killed in the drug war did not have anywhere to run to, that's why they went to the ICC)

He said there were cases where there were no police reports to document the deaths and cases where victims were listed as having died of cardiac arrest but found to have bullet holes in the head.
