THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte have started arriving and gathering in the fenced green patch just outside the ICC detention facility on Friday, March 28, to celebrate the politician's 80th birthday.

Since the former president, who is facing charges of the crime against humanity or murder, was detained here, supporters from different parts of Europe have converged on this once-quiet residential neighborhood of the Scheveningen prison in The Hague.

Lawyer Harry Roque, Duterte's former spokesperson and who is seeking asylum in the Netherlands, delivered a message in front of the supporters, leading the program to commemorate the birthday of the former president as of 11 a.m. local time.

He focused on anecdotes about the simple life of the former president.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (local time), the supporters are expected to stay and have a picnic.

It is unclear whether Duterte’s common-law wife, Honeylet Avanceña, and their daughter Kitty Duterte, will be able to visit him.

On Thursday, Avanceña was denied entry to the facility for the second time.
