MANILA -- The Department of Agriculture is eyeing to increase the swine population in the country by 2 million heads per year in the next three years.

This is to reverse the damage brought about by African swine fever which has significantly hurt swine producers in the country, and caused price spikes in the market.

"Sa ngayon nasa 8 million (heads) tayo, so we intend to reach 14 million in three years," Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said.

Tiu Laurel Jr. said the DA has a budget earmarked for repopulation, and they intend to import more pigs to expedite the increase of swine.

"Importante din yung vaccine, hopefully it will be rolled out this year sana ma commercialize na yan, so next year handa na tayo," he added.

(The vaccine is also important. Hopefully, it will be rolled out commercially this year.)

This increase is also expected to lessen our dependence on pork imports, since Filipinos prefer fresh local pork more compared to frozen imported ones.
