MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday denied Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa’s claim that his security details had been recalled.

In a brief response to reporters, the PNP Public Information Office dismissed Dela Rosa’s statement as “fake news,” citing the Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG).

However, the PSPG was not immediately available to provide further clarification.

In a Facebook post, Dela Rosa claimed that retired police officers and soldiers had been volunteering to protect him “since my security details were recalled by the PNP.”

Dela Rosa, a former PNP chief, is currently seeking re-election to the Senate.

It can be noted that under Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 11067, no person is allowed to employ, avail of, or engage the services of security personnel or bodyguards during the election period, which began on January 12.

Individuals facing security threats may apply for exemption.

The PNP earlier said about 197 candidates were stripped of protective security personnel in light of the upcoming May elections.

Dela Rosa said two of the police escorts who were pulled back from his detail had been with him for years. He said that after his return to Davao, he found out that the police escorts were told to return to their unit.

Pagdating ko dito wala na sila dahil pinareport na sila," Dela Rosa said in an interview.

Dela Rosa said he did not believe this was a form of oppression or harassment, as the police commanders could be trying to avoid complications.

So naintindihan ko di sila kasama sa panggigipit," Dela Rosa said, adding he was facing no threats to his life.
