MANILA — The Department of Migrant Workers said Tuesday it had canceled the registration of some recruitment agencies providing temporary quarters for overseas Filipino workers for failing to fulfill requirements and flouting rules.

This came after Sen. Raffy Tulfo conducted a surprise inspection of several accommodation houses in Metro Manila and discovered that around 18 to 20 OFWs or would-be OFWs shared a small living space in one house.

During the hearing of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers on Monday, Tulfo showed photos of crammed sleeping quarters, shabby comfort rooms, and empty first-aid kits. He said some accommodation houses lacked fire extinguishers and fire escapes.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac told TeleRadyo Serbisyo that they had already canceled the registration of 27 agencies for not fulfilling their requirements, including two of the three agencies inspected by Tulfo.

Cacdac added that only six remain registered with the department and that they would continue to be regulated.

"Ang gusto natin dito up to standards sila. Kung hindi, they should not be operating. It’s not a question kung kukulangin 'yung accommodation. Kung hindi, maghanap sila ng mas disenteng accommodation," he said.

"Napakahalaga na dito pa lamang bago sila umalis ay tama na ang pagtrato sa kanila."

DMW Undersecretary Bernard Olalia earlier said accommodation houses are inspected before they are allowed to operate.
