MANILA -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday welcomed reports that the United States Indo-Pacific Command (US INDOPACOM) is sending another battery of the Mid-Range Capability (MRC) Typhon missile to the country.

"This is a welcome development for the AFP. We could say na the more, the merrier. The more assets we have, the more also that we are able to train our personnel," AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla told reporters in a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

"The Philippine Army welcomes this dahil mas mapapabilis natin ang training ng ating personnel," Philippine Army spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala added.

A report by US-based Defense News said the US Army's 3rd Multidomain Task Force unit is "standing up its long-range fires battalion over the next year, including readying its Typhon battery for deployment in the Pacific theater."

This marks the Army's second such missile system to enter the region.

The US deployed the first Typhon missile system to the Philippines in April 2024 as part of the joint Salaknib and Balikatan exercises.

The system has since remained in the country, drawing the ire of the Chinese government, which has claimed the deployment "creates tensions and antagonism in the region."

But Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said the country's defense posture is not designed against any other country, welcoming the possible deployment of a second Typhon battery here.

"We welcome all opportunities to be able to train with modern weapon systems. The defense posture of the Republic of the Philippines is not designed against any other country. It is an action of a sovereign state," Trinidad said.

He went on, "In the region, we have been abiding by the rules-based international order and international law. Other countries like the Chinese Communist Party [have] not been abiding by international law; they have been destructing the region."

China earlier called on the Philippines to pull out the US' Typhon missile launchers from the country.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. offered Beijing a deal, saying he is willing to remove the weapon system if China stops its acts of aggression in the West Philippine Sea.

The AFP has also emphasized that no other country can dictate how Manila will fortify its defenses.
