MANILA — Members of transport group Manibela came early to one of their strike centers along Caruncho Avenue in Pasig Tuesday for the second day of their transport strike.

Equipped with banners that said "No to Jeepney Phaseout", Manibela members started their transport strike program at 8 a.m. Some Manibela members said they don't mind being out on the streets under the hot sun to explain their grievances against jeepney consolidation and phaseout.

Laban!," said Racquel Samarita, wife of another jeepney driver.

Manibela members are questioning consolidation for jeepneys under the PUV Modernization Program, in which jeepney drivers and operators are required to form or join a cooperative or a corporation.

Transportation officials have said consolidation would provide transport workers with a more secure salary system, social security benefits, and a better chance of acquiring loans.

Manibela chairman Mar Valbuena earlier said some jeepney drivers were apprehended after failing to meet the consolidation deadline,  with fines reaching as high as P50,000.

According to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), the group failed to paralyze public transport on the first day of the transport strike on Monday.

MINIMAL EFFECT ON COMMUTERS

During the second day of the strike, majority of the commuters in Pasig area did not encounter delays.

Napupuno naman po agad," Angelu Bonifacio, a commuter, said.

"Hindi naman po [nahirapan sumakay]," said JC Saquiton, also a commuter.

The Pasig Traffic and Parking Management Office, together with MMDA and LTO, monitored the program along Caruncho Avenue in case government buses would be needed.

By around 10:00 in the morning, the group left the area, and no government bus arrived since there were no stranded commuters.
