MANILA — The Masungi Georeserve on Wednesday said its developer Blue Star has received the eviction notice from the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) ordering them to vacate Lot 10, where the conservation area was located.

In a statement, Masungi Georeserve urged President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to "intervene" and stop the enforcement of the eviction order, which gave them 15 days to vacate the lot.

"We plead with President Marcos Jr. to intervene... [P]ause and review the DENR’s eviction order to allow for a fair and thorough review [and] engage in open dialogue with all stakeholders to find a just and sustainable path forward," the group said in a statement.

In an interview with Headstart, Masungi Georeserve Foundation's Ann Dumaliang said they received DENR's notice via mail on Monday.

On March 7, the DENR announced that it was cancelling its 2002 agreement with Blue Star Corp., the firm that developed the Masungi Georeserve, over the alleged violations in the said contract.

"Due process was not exercised... They chose to unilaterally cancel an agreement that we have entered into in good faith," Dumaliang told ANC.

The cancellation of the deal would mean a government takeover of the Masungi Georeserve, a popular and award-winning ecotourist destination in Baras, Rizal.

On Wednesday, Masungi reiterated that DENR's decision was "abrupt" and "threatens not only years of dedicated forest restoration, wildlife protection, and sustainable geotourism but also the livelihoods of up to 100 hardworking rangers and their families who have committed their lives to protecting Masungi."

"This eviction order weakens the very safeguards designed to protect Masungi’s lands," the group said.

Masungi said DENR's order would embolden other entities who have "illegal claims" in the protected area.

"With the President’s leadership, we believe a fair and transparent solution will be reached for the benefit of all Filipinos," the group said.
