Members of Akbayan Partylist hold a protest outside the Chinese Consular Office in Makati on March 19, 2025, urging China to leave the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone and demand payment for the environmental damage in the West Philippine Sea caused by China’s alleged illegal activities.
The group called on the Philippine government to file a case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to hold China accountable and demand reparations for the environmental damage it caused in the West Philippine Sea.
Akbayan president Rafaela David emphasized during the protest that the Chinese government should take full responsibility for the destruction caused by its reclamation activities in the West Philippine Sea. It also called for compensation for Filipino fisherfolk "who have been deprived of their livelihood due to China's aggression in the waters."
