MANILA -- A certain “Paul” and “Raul” allegedly helped South Korean fugitive Na Ikhyeon escape, according to the accused during the hearing of the Senate Subcommittee on Justice and Human Rights on Tuesday.

Na, who testified via video conferencing, said the two Filipinos promised in November 2023 that they will move him to San Fernando, Pampanga. Na paid them P6 million.

Na escaped earlier this month allegedly with the help of three Bureau of Immigration (BI) employees who accompanied him to a hearing at the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office.

In a CCTV video, he was seen entering Pegasus, a club in Quezon City, and later on leaving that club and boarding a white van. He was eventually rearrested.

During the Senate hearing, Na said “Paul” introduced himself as as a high-ranking official in the BI’s Intramuros office while Raul was a cop.

BI Commissioner Attorney Joel Anthony Viado said they do not know of a Paul and Raul. They tried verifying their identity with the use of pictures but no one supposedly knows the two.

The agency has terminated the three BI employees, two of whom were hired on a contractual basis.

“Aside from the investigation internally, nag-file po kami ng kaso before the City Prosecutor of Quezon City,” Viado said. “Meron din po kaming finile sa Ombudsman, and our investigation is not confined to these three. Meron pa po kaming iniimbistigahan sa loob ng Bureau.”

Prior to his escape, Na previously paid a Korean national P8 million to help him post bail but after giving the money, the said Korean allegedly disappeared.
