MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte on Tuesday said that she is scheduled to travel to the Netherlands to speak with lawyers following the arrest of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte.

The family’s lawyer in charge of the former president’s case before the International Criminal Court (ICC) said the arrest of the former Philippine leader is unprecedented, according to Vice President Duterte after she was denied entry to the Villamor Air Base, where her father was being held.

“Kausap namin yung aming ICC lawyer at sabi niya na this has never happened before at sabi niya na it’s craziness,” she said.

“Mayroon na pong arrangements kasi kailangan ko kausapin ang mga abogado kung saan man siya dalhin. Pupunta kami, ako at mga abodago at doon kami mag-uusap kung ano ang dapat gawin,” she said.

The Vice President did give further details about her supposed flight, but she underscored that their camp is not focused in ensuring that the former President would either stay in the Philippines or be brought back home as soon as possible.

“Nagkausap kami [ng tatay ko] kanina. Naintindihan ko lang sa kaniya na, 'Wala tayong magagawa. That’s life, que sera sera',” she said.

“Sa totoo lang dapat hindi talaga yan umalis ng bansa si former President Rodrigo Duterte,” she said.

“Nakalagay sa rules ng ICC na the defendant should be taken to a local court. Dapat dinala siya sa korte at yung proseso natin sa loob ang masusunod para iimplement ang warrant,” she claimed.

Duterte was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 11 around 9:40 a.m. due to an ICC order linked to his crimes against humanities case still pending at the Hague.

Despite the former president’s insistence that due process was not observed in his arrest and that the ICC no longer has jurisdiction over the Philippines, he was still seen boarding a chartered aircraft around 9 p.m., a flight allegedly bound to the Netherlands.

The Vice President slammed the President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for allegedly going back against an earlier promise that the his administration would not cooperate with the ICC, which has been investigating extrajudicial killings committed under Duterte’s presidency.

“I wrote him a letter and he replied that there will be no cooperation with the ICC. We will release that letter,” the Vice President said.

“There is no legal basis at all to turn over or endorse the former president to the ICC… Kung para sila sa justice at batas, walang batas dito e so nasaan sila? Gagawin nila kung ano ang gusto nila kahit hindi tama, kahit mali,” she said.

“Nakakalungkot dahil saan ka ba nakahanap ng bayan na yung kaniyang citizen bibigay niya sa dayuhan. Nakakahiya bilang isang Pilipino,” she said.

The Gulfstream G550 bringing the former president to the Hague took off at 11:03 p.m. from Villamor Air Base.

The chartered long-range business jet aircraft taxied at around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday night, according to video footage shared on Facebook by a retired police officer.
