MANILA (UPDATED) — The government plans to phase out EDSA bus lanes when rider capacity on the Metro Rail Transit increases, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said Wednesday, adding it also plans to "modify" bike lanes to have bicycles share them with motorcycles, which are heavier and generally travel at higher speeds.

Transport reform advocates, including the Move As One Coalition, have been calling for improved public transportation but have also stressed that commuters are served better by having more options. Those options could include buses and trains, as well as active transport like bicycles.

Remulla said Wednesday that the bike lanes on EDSA would be "modified" to become two lanes to accommodate motorcycles.
