MANILA (UPDATE 4) — More schools have announced class suspensions on Feb. 25, 2025, to commemorate the 39th EDSA People Power anniversary despite a Palace order declaring the date a special working day.

Some of the schools said that they were canceling classes to preserve the relevance of the EDSA People Power Revolution. 

Other institutions said they were suspending classes on February 25 to let students join activities that commemorate the EDSA People Power uprising.

Here are the schools that suspended classes on Feb. 25, 2025:

• De La Salle Philippines (All 16 schools)

• University of Santo Tomas

• University of the Philippines - Cebu

• General de Jesus College

• Holy Child Catholic School, Inc.

• Imus Institute Inc

EDSOR schools

• La Salle Green Hills

• Saint Pedro Poveda College

• Xavier School

• Immaculate Conception Academy

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines president Angelo Jimenez announced that the university will adopt alternative learning on February 25.

He advised chancellors to determine work and class arrangements for their respective campuses to support EDSA People Power anniversary events.

UP Los Baños Chancellor Jose Camacho Jr. in a separate statement announced that all UPLB classes would shift to online asynchronous mode on the said date.

The Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University also announced Wednesday that it would implement asynchronous learning on the EDSA anniversary.

It urged the Ateneo community to hear mass at 12:30 p.m. on February 25 to relive "this important milestone in the story of the Filipino people."

STUDENT COUNCILS URGE ADMINS TO 'DEFY MARCOS JR., HONOR EDSA'

In a press statement, the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines commended schools that have already declared class suspensions and alternative class arrangements to commemorate the anniversary of EDSA People Power and called on others  to heed student councils and follow suit.

"Schools are not just institutions of learning; they are spaces where history, values, and democratic principles must be upheld. Declaring February 25 as a non-working day is more than a scheduling decision—it is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to democracy, freedom, and justice," SCAP said.

"The continued exclusion of EDSA from the list of non-working holidays is an attempt to erase its significance and cleanse the name of the Marcoses. But we have the power to resist. As institutions dedicated to truth and nation-building, we must ensure that Filipino students and school communities have the opportunity to commemorate and reflect on this pivotal moment in Philippine history," the councils also said.
