MANILA – Labor leader and senatorial aspirant Atty. Luke Espiritu criticized prevailing political dynasties in the Philippines, noting how it had dominated the country’s top posts – evolving at “another level.”

Facing ABS-CBN News during its Harapan series, Espiritu said political dynasties before only prevailed in local areas.

“Umabot na ang dynasties sa rurok ng kanilang kapangyarihan,” said Espiritu.

“It is fast evolving. Ang ating national government, ang Malacañang, will be contested by two dynasties: dynasties of the north and dynasties of the south,” he added.

This just showed, he pointed out, the “worsening problem of political dynasties” in the country.

Fear grips the voting public as they are supposedly threatened at the local level by these dynasties, noting how “violent” these families are.

“Mayroon pang openly diba? ‘Kapag hindi niyo ko minahal, wala kayong P10,000 o P15,000. ‘Yan ay hindi free choice. Ang dynasties ay nandyan kasi nakakatakot sila,” he said.

The political machinery of these dynasties, the labor leader said, is a combination of public funds or intimidation to assert their control in social and mainstream media.

“These are manufactured consent, hindi totoong consent yan. Kung gusto natin ng totoong consent, anong gusto ng taumbayan, alisin natin ang factor ng pera at makinarya. Tingnan natin kung totoong bobotohin sila,” he said.

Dominant political clans in the Philippines are poised to do battle in the local races during this year’s midterm polls.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec), for its part, is set to hear a disqualification petition filed against Rep. Erwin Tulfo, Rep. Jocelyn Tulfo, Rep. Ralph Wendel Tulfo, Wanda Teo, and Ben Tulfo for allegedly violating a constitutional provision against political dynasties.

In the petition, lawyer Virgilio Garcia said the respondents are part of the same family, the arrangement of which is prohibited under the 1987 Constitution.

Senate President Francis Escudero last year dismissed criticisms regarding the potential prevalence of political families in the Senate after the 2025 elections, saying there is no law against it and that having relatives together at the chamber will not affect legislation.

Candidates who are related to incumbents are seen to have an advantage over those who do not.
