MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday seemingly fired back at former President Rodrigo Duterte’s kill remark against senatorial candidates topping pre-election surveys, slamming those who resort to threats instead of nation-building.

The administration slate “Alyansa Para Sa Bagong Pilipinas” is focused on finding legislative solutions for the Philippines’ pressing woes instead of bickering with political rivals, Marcos Jr. said during the slate’s sortie in Pasay City.

“Tinitingnan ko yung mga kandidato namin kung may napasabugan na ba ng granada,” the President said in jest as he appeared on stage with his 12 senatorial bets for the 2025 midterm elections.

“‘Yan ang kaibahan ng Alyansa sa lahat ng mga tumatakbo… Wala kayong maririnig na masasamang salita. Wala kayong maririnig na pananakot. Wala kayong maririnig na pagmumura,” he said.

“Malinaw kung ano ang direksyon ng Alyansa: Ito ay ang kaunlaran, hindi ang pang-aapi, hindi pananakot, hindi ang pagsisisigaw,” he said.

Marcos Jr. went further by highlighting that the Alyansa candidates are all seasoned lawmakers with experience either as former senators, House legislators, Cabinet members or local chief executives.

“Hindi na sila kumakapakapa sa kanilang trabaho. Alam na nila ano ang gagawin. Alam nila ang gobyerno. Kabisado nila mula sa matataas na posisyon,” he said.

“Hindi na sila nag-dadadada. Trabaho lang sila nang trabaho. Wala silang hinahangad na panggugulo. Wala silang iniisip na pagwatak-watakain ang Pilipinas,” he said.

“Ang kailangan natin ay solusyon at hindi maaanghang at maiinit na salita na wala namang kabuluhan,” he added.

Last week, Duterte told PDP-Laban members and supporters to just “kill” some leading candidates in pre-election surveys so that their party’s bets can bag the 12 vacant Senate seats in May.

Most of the candidates who are topping recent pre-election polls are from Marcos Jr.’s administration slate.
