MANILA — Chief Legal Counsel and former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile marked his 101st birthday on Friday.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. paid tribute to Enrile, saying the latter had led "a life, that by any measure, has been truly well-lived".

He said Enrile’s birthday, which falls on Valentine’s Day,was a reminder that his sharpness mind “is equaled only by the warmth of his heart for the Filipino people.”

"We are truly blessed to have you on our team as our Chief Presidential Legal Counsel," Marcos said.

"We wish you good health, good cheer, and good spirits as we celebrate your 101st birthday with you," he added.

Enrile served as defense chief of Marcos Jr.’s father and namesake, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

Enrile, who is also a lawyer, later entered politics and eventually became a senator.

In 2011, he led the Senate in hearing the impeachment trial of former Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Enrile is aware of the internet memes poking fun at his age, his granddaughter Tiana Kocher revealed last year.

“He definitely laughs, but I don’t think he understands it, like the humor, but he has seen it. Like the ‘dinosaur’ one, he’s seen it. And he just laughs. He likes that one,” she said.
