MANILA — The Department of Justice “will have the fullest autonomy” in the criminal investigation of charges filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, Malacañang assured Thursday.

This, as the National Bureau of Investigation filed complaints of inciting to sedition and grave threats against the Vice President over her supposed public threat to have the first couple and the House speaker assassinated if she herself were killed amid a growing rift with Marcos Jr.

Allies of the Vice President however said that the charges are part of the demolition job against Duterte by her political enemies to put her out of contention in the presidential race of 2028.”

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin assured that Malacanang will not interfere in the case and “will let the process proceed on its own.”

“Because this is about a criminal investigation, the DOJ will have the fullest autonomy. We cannot give directions as far as these matters go,” Bersamin said.

The Palace official meanwhile said that it is up to the investigators to determine whether the Vice President’s statement constitutes an actual threat.

“Well, I don’t know. We will leave that into the hands of the investigators. This process will have to go through the full course if ever that matter is taken officially cognizance of,” he said.
