MANILA — Former senator Manny Pacquiao on Tuesday said he rebuked his staff member who was flagged for using the EDSA Busway last weekend.

The staff member, who is also part of Pacquiao's security detail, was reportedly driving a black Toyota van and leading two other vehicles while using unauthorized blinkers and sirens when they were apprehended on the bus carousel last Sunday.

"Inalis ko 'yung tao ko at pinagalitan ko. At saka sabi ko 'maling-mali 'yun ginawa ninyo, bakit ninyo tinakasan 'yung law enforcer?'" said Pacquiao, who is eyeing a Senate return in the Mayo polls.

He said he ordered the driver to return to accept the traffic tickets.

"Pinabalik ko do'n sabi ko 'Kunin n'yo 'yung ticket, magpa-ticket kayo dahil mali talaga 'yung ginagawa ninyo," Pacquiao in a chance interview.

The Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT) of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said the driver returned to apologize and get citations for disregarding traffic signs and illegal use of blinkers.

The former senator said he would not tolerate such behavior.

"Inalis ko na rito sa grupo ko... Bawal sa 'kin 'yun," Pacquiao said.

Jojo Cagumay, Pacquiao's head of security, clarified earlier that the Senate candidate was also initially unaware of the incident but had then taken steps to reinforce traffic rules within the staff. Cagumay apologized as well for the incident.

'EDSA BUSWAY SHOULD STAY'

Senator JV Ejercito on Tuesday said the EDSA Busway should stay since it helps to "move people" especially during rush hour.

This came after local agencies suggested the EDSA bus lane's phaseout once the MRT-3 operations become more efficient.

“We need to move people kasi nakikita mo naman kapag rush hour nakakaawa ang tao, ang haba haba ng pila. And kung makakadagdag pa tayo, kung makakagulo pa tayo sa rush hour traffic, papasok pa tayo ng busway, hayaan natin na tuloy tuloy ang buses. Pagtulong 'yan sa MRT," the senator said.

“Pag tinanggal pa yan, di naman sa ano ako doon, baka lalong gumulo,” he added. “I think hayaan na natin muna siguro yun.”

Meanwhile, he expressed support to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)'s proposal to have a shared lane for motorcycles and bicycles along EDSA.
