The call to raise the entry level salaries of teachers is not unreasonable given the higher cost of basic commodities, said Raymond Basilio, secretary general of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT). “Nakakabahala na &#x27;yung ating mga teachers, nabubuhay na lang sa pagre-renew ng mga utang,” he said in a press conference. “P50,000 is not that much with the recent increases sa mga suweldo, basic commodities,” he said.<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/10/3/marcos-jr-vows-salary-increase-more-benefits-for-teachers-1824" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Marcos Jr. vows salary increase, more benefits for teachers</a> Last year, ACT pushed for a similar increment in teachers’ salaries. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s executive order no. 64 adjusted the salaries of all government workers, including public school teachers, but that only gave an increase of P50 a day, said ACT chairperson Vladimer Quetua. Shortly after being named as the new head of the Department of Education (DepEd) in mid-2024, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said that while a P50,000 salary for teachers may only be “doable” if the Philippines’ fiscal conditions improve, he vowed to push for a salary hike for educators under the Marcos Jr. administration. But in December 2024, the bicameral conference committee slashed DepEd’s 2025 budget by around P12 billion. “Ang ninanakawan niyo sa budget cut na inyong ginawa ay hindi lang mga mamamayan, estudyante at mga guro… pero yung kinabukasan ng mga mamamayan,” said Ruby Bernardo, ACT regional president in the National Capital Region. “Ang sumalubong sa aming buena mano ay kung paano pagkakasyahin yung natitirang pera sa aming bulsa habang napakataas ng pagsirit ng presyo ng mga bilihin,” she said. The government needs to reduce the class size in public schools by enticing more Filipinos to join the teaching profession, Bernardo said. “Sa NCR, ang pinakamalaking class size na ay 1:90. Hindi talaga makapagbibigay ng kaledad na edukasyon ang mga teacher kung ganiyan ang sitwasyon sa mga paaralan,” she said.<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2024/12/16/deped-to-release-p20k-incentive-for-teachers-personnel-1242">DepEd to release P20,000 incentive for teachers, personnel</a> “Nananatiling kulang ang non-teaching personnel… sinasalo pa din ng mga teachers ang non-teaching tasks,” she added. ACT said it hoped that the DepEd would consult teachers before drafting their budget proposal for 2026 to make it more responsive to grassroots needs. “Hinahamon namin si Sec. Angara na patunayan niya,” Basilio said. “Tapos na &#x27;yung kaniyang honeymoon period. Dapat ipakita niya yung transformative leadership na kaniyang sinasabi,” he added.
