MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways says it has been able to complete 70% of the 21,000 projects — worth an aggregate P900 billion— that it worked on in 2024.

"Eto marami po ito. Nandyan ang pagkumpuni ng kalsada, nandyan ang mga flood control, nandyan ang mga local projects and so forth and so on," Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan said in a televised briefing.

He said the projects completed include those started in 2023 and that were carried over into the next year.

“We have two years to implement ito, so until 2025 matatapos naming lahat ng ito, itong mga sinabi ko na nasimulan sa 2024. Ito po ang malaking programa ng department kasama ang local at foreign-assisted projects.”

Bonoan says among the agency’s significant accomplishments in 2024 are the completion of the Palapag-Simora Bridge, which is part of the Samar Pacific Coastal Road Project in Eastern Visayas; the First Phase of the Integrated Risk Reduction Flood Management Project for low-lying areas in Pampanga; and the Flood Control Project in Cagayan de Oro.

WORK ON 11 MAJOR PROJECTS SEEN TO START IN 2025

The DPWH is also looking to begin construction in 2025 on at least 11 major infrastructure projects, Bonoan said.

These include the 32-kilometer Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge, work on which is projected to start in the first semester.

Once completed, the bridge will be second longest bay bridge in the world and will significantly improve traffic in Metro Manila, he said.

Another project that will begin construction this year is the 37-kilometer Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island Bridge Project, which will be financed through Official Development Assistance from the Korean Eximbank.

Bonoan says the government will also start the construction of the expressway from Calamba to Sucat along the Laguna Lakeshore and a fourth bridge in Cebu that will connect Mandaue City on Cebu Island to Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan Island.
