MANILA — The Bureau of Immigration reported the arrest of a Japanese fugitive wanted by authorities in Tokyo for allegedly swindling a fellow Japanese.

The suspect, identified as Yokota Tetsuya, was arrested by Immigration officers on Thursday, Jan. 2 in Binondo, Manila.

Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said he issued a mission order for Tetsuya at the request of the Japanese government.

Viado also said Tetsuya will be deported back to Japan and will be perpetually banned from re-entering the Philippines.

Tetsuya is the subject of an arrest warrant issued by a court in Omiya, Japan on May 31, 2024.

Authorities alleged Tetsuya and his accomplices made a fraudulent phone call to their victim, and were able to entice him to give them 2.75 million yen, or more than US$17,000, in cash via postal mail.

Tetsuya is currently detained at the BI detention facility in Taguig City pending deportation proceedings.
