MANILA – Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. has ordered the relief and preventive suspension of the four New Bilibid Prison personnel following the stabbing incident at the NBP compound last week.

The stabbing incident that occurred early Thursday morning led to the death of a person deprived of liberty (PDL) and injuries to two others.

In a statement on Sunday, Catapang ordered the relief and preventive suspension of four personnel including the acting commander of the guards on Saturday.

Catapang stressed the "critical role corrections officers play in ensuring the safety of inmates" following the incident. He highlighted that one of their primary responsibilities is "to adopt proactive security measures" to prevent violence inside the facility.

“This situation indicates a lapse in our operations, resulting in the death of PDL Ricardo Peralta and the wounding of PDLs Reginal Lacuerta and Bert Cupada. It is essential that we hold individuals accountable for these failures," Catapang said.

“Our personnel should be alert and vigilant to enhance the safety protocols that govern the custody ang management of inmates any time of the day,” he added.

Catapang sent a letter request to the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) for parallel probe on the incident "to further establish the facts, promote transparency, and determine accountability."

Last Friday, BuCor formally requested the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police to investigate the stabbing incident.

BuCor said at least four PDLs who are believed to be involved are being investigated.
