MANILA -- The BRP Teresa Magbanua has issued radio challenges to a China Coast Guard vessel sailing within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) near Zambales.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine ship actively communicated with China Coast Guard vessel CCG-3304 to notify the latter's unlawful presence within the Philippine waters.

"The BRP Teresa Magbanua has consistently communicated with CCG-3304, issuing hourly radio challenges to assert that it is operating illegally within Philippine territory," said the PCG in a statement.

"This ongoing radio engagement highlights that the actions of CCG-3304 violate the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which China has ratified, as well as the 2016 Arbitral Award."

The Philippine Coast Guard said BRP Teresa Magbanua was able to push CCG-3304 away from Zambales to an approximate distance of 85-90 nautical miles.

Vessels of the Philippine Coast Guard have been monitoring Chinese ships off the coast of Zambales. On Sunday, the agency said that the BRP Cabra was successful in keeping a bigger vessel from the Chinese Coast Guard from advancing closer to the coast.

In a statement late Tuesday, the PCG said it has detected the presence of China Coast Guard vessels in the vicinity of Bajo de Masinloc, or Scarborough Shoal, off Zambales in the West Philippine Sea.

Among the three Chinese Coast Guard vessels detected is CCG 5901, the largest coast guard ship in the world that is often referred to as the "monster ship."
