MANILA — Twenty of the 29 former and active police officers who were ordered arrested for their alleged involvement in the mishandled P6.7-billion drug case have been placed in the custody of the Philippine National Police as of Monday.

PNP spokesperson BGen. Jean Fajardo said of those in custody, 10 were in various arresting units, nine were in the PNP Custodial Center, and one was in Manila City Jail.

Out of the nine who remain at large, four are active police officials, three are retired, and one was dismissed from the service.

“As of today, may nine pa tayong ina-account. Yun ang pinagtutulungan ng CIDG [PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group] at ibang units,” Fajardo told reporters at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

“Kausap ko lang kanina si Gen. [Nicolas III] Torre and he assured the PNP leadership na hindi sila titigil hangga’t hindi maa-account ang natitirang siyam,” she added.

Fajardo noted that the PNP has not received surrender feelers from those who were still at large.

“Wala sila [active personnel] sa restrictive custody… It is in their best interest na sumuko lamang, katulad ng ginawa ng iba nilang mga kasama para mabigyan din sila ng pagkakataon—as a matter of duty process—na sagutin ang mga reklamo,” she told those who have yet to surrender.

Last January 15, the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) ordered the arrest of 29 policemen involved in the bungling of the prosecution of arrested personalities in the controversial 990-kilo drug bust in Tondo in October 2022.

PNP Drug Enforcement Group (PDEG) operatives arrested a drug pusher in the buy bust, who later led the cops to an establishment in Manila where 990 kilos of shabu were recovered.

The establishment was later found to be owned by PMSg. Rodolfo Mayo Jr., who served as an intelligence officer for the PDEG.

The case became even more controversial due to an alleged attempt by several police officers to save Mayo.
