The iconic EDSA Shrine, a popular symbol of the 1986 People Power revolution, has been granted a National Shrine status, according to its rector.

Fr. Jerome Secillano, Rector of the EDSA Shrine, announced this in a social media post on Saturday.

"I extend my deep gratitude to the Bishops of the Philippines for voting unanimously to grant NATIONAL SHRINE Status to EDSA SHRINE," he said.

The EDSA Shrine, or the Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, is a church of the Archdiocese of Manila located at the intersection of Ortigas Avenue and EDSA in Quezon City.

It is also known as Mary, Queen of Peace Shrine.

Standing on the site, commemorating the 1986 People Power Revolution, is the Our Lady of EDSA sculpture.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) also granted National Shrine to two other Marian shrines.

These are the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto in Sampaloc, Manila and the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu in San Mateo, Rizal.

Our Lady of Loreto, better known as the Sampaloc Church, is located along Figueras Street (formerly Bustillos) in the district of Sampaloc in Manila. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and her pilgrimage site in Loreto, Italy.

Meanwhile, the Parish of Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu is an old church that dates back to the early Spanish era of 1596. It was named on the devotion to Our Lady of Aranzazu from Spain.
