MANILA — Former Bayan Muna Representative and now senatorial candidate Teodoro Casiño said it is time for the Philippines to legalize same sex marriages, just like its neighbor Thailand.

"Oo. Irerecognize ba natin yan? O parang magbubulag-bulagan tayo? So, there has to be a policy. And that requires legislation. Kailangan mong harapin. Otherwise, gulo yan eh,” Casiño told ABS-CBN News’ Harapan 2025.

Casiño urged the Catholic Church to address reality when it was pointed out that his position would put him at loggerheads with the church.

"Ang Simbahan naman is also dynamic. The church also has to address the realities of society.

Casiño also voiced support for the controversial Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy Bill.

"In principle, kailangan natin ng ganyang batas. At a young age. Kasi alam mo bakit? Pangalawa, yung internet. Talagang ano na yan? Walang censorship, censorship. Napaka-exposed ng mga bata. You need a classroom setting para pag-usapan, ano ba ito? Ano ba ang tama? At ano ba ang mali?”Casiño said.

“Ngayon, ano yung age appropriate? Siguro, dyan tayo mag-usap. But definitely, ako, Catholic school ako galing. As early as grade 4, tinuturo sa amin ano yung parts of the body, ano yung dapat mo, paano mo pangangalagaan yung sarili mo, and then bakit kailangan hindi mo yan, hindi ka maaabuso. And that requires education. So, importante yan.

Casiño believes the current controversy stems from a misunderstanding between the proponents and critics of the measure.

"I think may misunderstanding kasi. So, kailangan lang siguro pag-usapan yan. But I think, in principle, importanteng pag-usapan nga sa isang classroom setting na walang malisya, pinag-aaralan bilang isang subject, at hindi tayong umaasa sa internet at sa mga barka-barkada para sa edukasyon ng ating mga bata,” Casiño said.
