MANILA — A Chinese man allegedly involved in espionage at military sites covered by the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with the US faces deportation proceedings, the Bureau of Immigaration said.

But deportation may come only after he is cleared of any criminal cases that might be filed against him.

In a statement, BI said it had obtained details about the unnamed Chinese national who allegedly conducted espionage activities at the EDCA sites.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said that details about the foreign national were obtained by the agency, such as his travels in and out of the Philippines since 2015.

“The BI Chief said that they will be initiating deportation proceedings against him, to add to the other cases that will be filed against the man locally,” the BI said in the statement.

The National of Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice and the Armed Forces of the Philippines presented the alleged spy in a press conference Monday and identified the individual as Deng Yuanqing.

The BI also said the alleged spy is supposedly married to a Filipina.

“We will ensure that we will identify any foreign cohorts that might be in the country assisting him,” said Viado.

Viado also assured that alleged spies in the country will face serious punishment for their crimes under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.
