MANILA -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) is preparing to address new challenges in the upcoming midterm elections, including misinformation and electronic vote-buying, PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said Monday.

Marbil said that the PNP is coordinating with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to tackle vote-buying through e-wallets as part of its efforts to address the traditional issues of "guns, goons, and gold" in Philippine politics.

For the upcoming elections, he added, the PNP will propose solutions to the poll body to combat these new threats.

"Dati, three Gs lang eh. Ngayon, three Gs and one F – fake news. 'Yon ang magiging problema natin," Marbil told reporters in a chance interview at Camp Crame.

He warned that fake news could have a significant impact on voter decisions and damage candidates' reputations.

"Fake news will dictate who will win," Marbil added. "Kasi talagang siraan ito eh. Paano natin mako-kontrol 'yan sa media, sa social media, sa internet, sa Facebook natin kung mga maling impormasyon ang pinapalabas nila – destroying others."

(Fake news will decide who wins. Because it's all about character assassination. How can we control that in the media, on social media, on the internet, on Facebook, when they're spreading false information to destroy others?)

GUNS AND GOONS

Marbil also emphasized that the PNP will go after police and military personnel involved in supporting politicians, as part of its campaign against "goons."

"We will make sure you will not be promoted kapag nagamit ka dito [sa politika]. Gusto namin talaga na ang PNP ay very apolitical," Marbil said.

(We will make sure you will not be promoted if you get involved in politics. We really want the PNP to remain apolitical.)

"Let us be apolitical. Let’s give dignity to our uniform," he added.

The PNP is also leading the Comelec checkpoints to enforce the gun ban during the election period. Additionally, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has been instructed to intensify operations against loose firearms, according to Mabril.

He said an increased police presence will be deployed to election hotspots to maintain peace and order during the elections.
