MANILA — The Department of Education will review the implementation of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education.

This, following the House Committee on Basic Education Chair Representative Roman Romulo suggestion to suspend its implementation.

Speaking to ABS-CBN News, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the matter is expected to be tackled during their Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday.

“Well isa yon sa mga tinitingnan natin kung papayagan ng batas na isuspend  namin yung implementation dahil kami sinusundan lang naming kung ano yung nasa batas,” he said.

(That’s one thing we will look at if the law will allow its implementation to be suspended because we are just following what’s stipulated in the law.)

“Tama po si Chairman Roman na dapat i-review at tingnan yung laman ng ating sex education na siguraduhin na angkop sa edad na tinuturuan at angkop din sa ating kultura.”

(Chairman Roman (Romulo) is right that it should be reviewed and the contents of sex education should be scrutinized to ensure that it is age-appropriate and in line with our culture.)

The education chief assured that contrary to criticisms that sexuality education exposes young children to “intimacy and reproduction”, what is actually being taught at kindergarten is basic foundational knowledge like body parts with no “sexual references”.

Angara says they agree with President Ferdinand Marcos Junior’s view that Comprehensive Sexuality Education should be age-appropriate.

“Hindi dapat ituro yung hindi pa niya naiintindihan at maaaring hindi maganda ituro sa bata. Maganda naman ang intention pero ang importante hindi lang implementasyon, di lang yung intention, kundi yung implementation or yung execution noong batas,” Angara said.

(Teaching children things they don’t have the ability to understand yet may not have good outcomes. The intention of the CSE is good, but aside from intention the implementation or execution of the law should also be good as well.)
