MANILA — Over 7,000 devotees marched in the three-hour Maringal na Prusisyon ng Sto. Niño de Tondo on Sunday morning, according to the Moriones police.

The procession began shortly after the 3 a.m. Festive Mass led by Reverend Father Juvelan Samia.

“Dapat ang pamilyang Pilipino ay maging instrumento ng paglapit ng mga bata sa panginoong Diyos,” said Reverend Samia in his homily.

Jas Benedicto, 27, took this to heart as she brought her 2-year-old daughter dressed as Sto. Niño, to the feast.

“Every week naman tina-try namin na isama siya sa pagsisimba… kasi yung every morning na magkakasama kaming tatlo is a blessing na kaya dapat pinapakita din namin sa kanya pano magpasalamat sa Diyos,” Benedicto said.

Figures of the Holy Family were paraded during the procession, starting with the image of the child Jesus, followed by images of Our Lady of Candelaria and of St. Joseph.

Road closures were in place in areas along the route, according to the Manila Police District.

While the procession was ongoing, the Sto. Niño de Tondo Parish conducted a blessing of Sto. Niño images brought by devotees.

Yaw Insigne, 21, sought a blessing for his three-decade-old image of Sto. Niño, dressed as Superman. He offered prayers for his mother working in Hawaii, who had passed down her faith to him.

“Ang superman ng buhay ko si Sto. Niño. Binibiyayaan pa po niya kami ng pamilya ko ng mabuting kalusugan,” said Insigne.

As the church reached its capacity, several devotees moved outside to observe the mass. Brother JP Tagapan, one of the procession organizers, explained that the overwhelming devotion to Sto. Nino stems from its child-like image.

“Pag sinabi nating bata, napakalapit ng bata sa atin. Si Kristo bilang bata, naging daan upang makilala natin ang Diyos, mas makilala natin sa paraang niyayakap natin ang pagkamusmos at pagkakumbaba ng isang bata,” said Tagapan.

The procession ended at 7 a.m., and the image of the Child Jesus was welcomed with a solemn rite at Sto. Niño de Tondo Parish.

The 33-hour mass, which began at 3 p.m. on Saturday, will continue until 11 p.m. on Sunday.
