MANILA — PGen. Rommel Francisco Marbil may be extended for another 4 months as chief of the Philippine National Police, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Thursday.

Remulla said there were strong indications that Marbil’s term would be extended although there was no official word yet from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

“From all indications ma-extend siya but there is no official word yet from the president,” said Remulla.

Remulla added the upcoming midterm election could play as a key factor for Marbil’s extension. Marbil may be extended until June.

“That’s the biggest reason I think it’s the midterm elections dahil you cannot shake things up now, mag-uumpisa na yung campaign period din,” Remulla said.

“Indications that he will stay to take command of the PNP until after the elections,” he added.

Marbil was named as the country’s PNP chief on April 1, 2024, and he is expected to retire on February 7, 2025 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56.

He is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Sambisig Class of 1991.
