MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s trilateral call with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has been moved to January 13 “due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles,” Malacañang said on Sunday, the day the meeting was originally scheduled.

Marcos Jr. and his American and Japanese counterparts were expected to tackle developments in the Japan, Philippines and US (JAPHUS) trilateral agreement, a series of economic and security partnerships among the three countries that were formalized in April 2024.

“The Trilateral Leaders’ Phone Call with the US President, the Prime Minister of Japan, and the President of the Philippines has been moved to 7am on Monday, January 13,” the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said in a statement.

“It was conveyed that this was due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles,” Communications Secretary Cesar Chavez told reporters when asked for the reason for the rescheduling.

Monster blazes engulfed some communities in Los Angeles last week, razing homes in the United States’ second largest city, and cloaking portions of the West Coast in toxic fumes and smog.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has advised the public to stay indoors and wear N95 masks when going outdoors as the wildfires continue to ravage communities around Hollywood.

As of January 11, at least 11 have died in the blaze that has gutted over 10,000 houses and buildings in the second largest city in the US, authorities said.
