MANILA – China has deployed its largest coast guard vessel in the waters of Zambales as the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) successfully pushed away one of its ships, PCG said on Saturday.

In a statement, PCG Commodore Jay Tarriela said the Philippines’ largest coast guard vessel – BRP Teresa Magbanua – already averted China Coast Guard vessel 3304 from getting near the coastline of Zambales, “achieving a remarkable distance of up to 97 nautical miles offshore.”

“This strategic maneuvering by the BRP Teresa Magbanua has prompted the People’s Republic of China to deploy the China Coast Guard 5901 ‘monster ship’ this afternoon, as they attempt to outmaneuver the PCG vessel,” said the PCG spokesperson on the West Philippine Sea.

“However, the dedication and vigilance of the officers and crew remain unwavering; no amount of intimidation from the China Coast Guard can deter their resolve,” Tarriela added.

China Coast Guard 5901, he said, already replaced CCG-3304 and continues to be located around 97 nautical miles off the Zambales coast.

“The PCG has consistently communicated over the radio, reminding the Chinese crew that they are unlawfully operating within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone and do not possess any legal authority to conduct maritime patrols,” he said.

“The PCG remains committed to safeguarding the country’s maritime jurisdiction and ensuring the rule of law within Philippine waters,” he said.
