MANILA — A person died and five others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on the Skyway At-Grade Southbound in Barangay Sun Valley in Parañaque City on Friday night.

According to the initial police investigation, the brakes of a 10-wheeler truck malfunctioned, causing it to crash into a pickup truck.

The force of the collision pushed the pickup vehicle forward and it  slammed into five more vehicles ahead of it.

The 54-year-old driver of the 10-wheeler truck said he checked the brakes before the trip, but could do nothing when they suddenly malfunctioned.

“Pasensya na po kayo, talagang hindi ko naman sinasadya ‘yon. Bigyan niyo naman ako ng tawad,” he said.

(I'm really sorry. I really did not mean for this to happen. Please forgive me)

The driver, who is now in the custody of the Highway Patrol Group SLEX Sub-office, Skyway Parañaque, faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injury, with damage to property.

“Naka-preno na ako, bigla na lang may umano sa likod namin. Ang lakas… nagising na lang ako na wasak na itong likod. Bigla kaming nawalan ng malay eh,” the driver of the pickup truck said.

(I was able to brake, but we were hit from behind. When I regained consciousness, the rear was already destroyed)

The driver added that they immediately asked the Skyway Patrol Group to call for an ambulance.

“Ang tagal (ng ambulansya) mga ilang minuto pa po eh. Noong una gumagalaw pa po eh. Bandang huli po sabi na ng nasa loob na kasama niya, wala na po eh. Wala nang pulso,” he added.

(They took a long time to get here, several minutes. At first, the victim was still moving, but their companion eventually said there was no longer any pulse)

Five other victims who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at a hospital while authorities continue to investigate the incident.

A multi-vehicle crash that on Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City on Thursday that left four dead and 30 injured was also attributed to malfunctioning brakes.
