QUEZON CITY — Various groups led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) and families of victims of extrajudicial killings have called for the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Organizations from several sectors held a protest action in front of the South Gate of the House Representatives on Wednesday afternoon, coinciding with the filing of the second impeachment complaint against Duterte.

Aside from Bayan, groups present include Makabayan, Gabriela Women’s Party-list,  Kabataan Party-list, PAMALAKAYA, KARAPATAN and Kalikasan People's Network for the Environment.

Their main battle cry during the program: "Impeach Sara now."

The groups said one of the grounds for impeachment — betrayal of public trust — is clear.

"Nilustay ni Sara Duterte ang kalahating bilyon nang hindi makatuwiran at pinagtakpan sa pamamagitan ng mga pekeng resibo... Saan ba napupunta ang confidential funds kung hindi ginagamit sa panunupil ng mga mamamayan ay ginagamit lamang upang pagsilbihan ang kanilang sariling interes," Lucky Oraller of BAYAN Southern Tagalog said.

"Naniningil ang taong bayan sa inyong katiwalian. Magsisilbing babala ito hindi lang sa iyo Sara Duterte, pati kay [President Ferdinand] Marcos Jr. at sa lahat ng tiwali at corrupt sa ating gobyerno. Maniningil ang taong bayan. Taong bayan ang naglagay sa inyo, taong bayan din ang magtatanggal sa inyo," he said.

They also slammed the Office of the Vice President for spending P125 million worth of confidential funds in 11 days in 2022, while Filipinos struggle to buy basic needs.

"Ganito po kalala ang paggastos ni Sara Duterte sa ating pera, sa pera ng mamamayan. Habang tayong mga ordinaryong Pilipino ay pinagkakasya ang ilang daang lamang piso sa isang araw," Kim Falyao of SIKLAB said.

"Sobra-sobrang pagbabanat na ng buto ang ating ginagawa para lang mabayaran ang ating mga pangangailangan, dagdag pa ang kaliwa't kanang tax na pinapataw ng gobyerno. Tapos wawaldasin lamang sa 11 araw?" Gabriela Women's Party-list Secretary General KJ Catequista added.

Falyao also criticized Duterte for her supposed failure to address the lack of school facilities and classrooms, citing the overpriced computers purchased by the Department of Education under her leadership.

"Gusto namin gawin ay patalsikin si Sara para hindi na maulit ang paglustay nang walang habas sa pera ng bayan, sa kaban ng bayan," RISE UP's Leony Pasco said.

Human rights group Karapatan and families of EJK victims demanded accountability from the Duterte administration and the Marcos administration on the deaths in the war on drugs.

"Bilang bahagi ng paghihingi natin ng hustisya ay agaran nating pagpapatalsik at pagpapa-impeach kay Sara Duterte at pagsingil kay Rodrigo Duterte. Hindi rin natin pakakawalan na singilin ang rehimen ni Bongbong Marcos Jr. Bakit? Hindi siya pwedeng mag-maangmaangan sa paglabag sa karapatan ng tao," Human rights lawyer Sol Taule said.

"Huwag po tayong madadala sa dramarama nila… Pareho silang may ninanakaw sa kaban ng bayan, pareho na patuloy na nagpapahirap sa mamamayang Pilipino, at patuloy na sila ang yumuyurak sa karapatan na tinatamasa dapat ng bawat mamamayan," she said.

The group said their protest action does not end on Wednesday, announcing they will hold another one next week. They peacefully dispersed after the short program.

Police personnel were on standby before and during the program, ensuring peace and order as well as no disruption to the traffic flow in the area.

While they were holding the protest action, over 70 complainants from progressive groups, youth organizations, and concerned citizens filed another impeachment complaint against Duterte inside the House.

"Betrayal of public trust" was among the grounds cited in the complaint, that will be endorsed by congressmen from the Makabayan bloc.

The first impeachment complaint was filed on Monday by civil society organizations and endorsed by Akbayan Party-list.

Malacañang on Tuesday distanced itself from the first complaint, after President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said removing Duterte from office will only be a "waste of time."
